The Illich Park Upgrade, Stage 2 project site is located on Charles Street, Aitkenvale between Elizabeth Street and Anne Street. On completion the $3.7M project will provide not only an invaluable stormwater detention function but it will also deliver new community recreational infrastructure including two (2) fully irrigated Rugby League fields, landscaped Playground/Fitness facilities and extensive concrete shared pedestrian/cycle pathway network.
Construction of the new fully turfed stormwater detention basin involves removal from site of approx. 120,000t of material which in turn provides additional retention capacity for approx. 65,000kl of stormwater, significantly improving flood conditions in the area. Once excavation and profiling of the basin is complete a state-of-the-art automatic irrigation system is installed and the area top soiled then turfed. Line marking completes the two (2) new Rugby League fields.
Civil construction works associated with the project includes upgrading of existing underground stormwater drainage adjacent the detention basin and upgrading on-street parking on Elizabeth Street north of Barnard Street.
Facilities delivered as part of the new Playground area include Basketball half-court, fully shaded children’s playground equipment on soft fall surface, dynamic and static exercise equipment, sheltered table/bench areas and new electric BBQ. These new Playground facilities are surrounded by new fully irrigated planting and turfed areas. Installation of new lighting and a CCTV system provides enhanced security to the area.
The project remains on schedule for completion late-June 2020.
